Mission: to advance the health of the people of Wisconsin by supporting medical education and health initiatives.

BSP Free Clinic

Volunteer professionals providing quality, specialty health care

The Benevolent Specialists Project (BSP) in Middleton, Wis. is the only free clinic in southern Wisconsin that provides specialty health care to the uninsured and medically underserved adults who do not otherwise receive medical assistance or Medicare.

Patients are referred to BSP via a network of primary care clinics throughout the state including more than 70 clinics in southern Wisconsin. Annually, the clinic treats over 1000 patients with a diverse range of health needs.

BSP maintains a cadre of over 70 volunteer clinicians, nurses and interpreters to provide direct care. These volunteer physicians and ancillary practitioners represent a variety of medical specialties such as cardiology, ophthalmology, rheumatology, endocrinology, nephrology and many more.

  • BSP will work with the volunteer clinician’s schedule.
  • The clinic is open from 12:30 p.m. to around 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. on the second Tuesday of each month, every Wednesday and Thursday and other times as needed.
  • Frequency: Some volunteers come to the clinic a few times a month, once a month or once every few of months, as determined by the volunteer’s availability.

What to expect:

The atmosphere is professional yet laid back. The clinicians take the time needed to ensure their patients leave feeling well cared for.

Current BSP needs:

  • Physical therapy, rheumatology, urology, orthopedics, gastroenterology and podiatry.
  • Physicians from other specialties are also welcome to volunteer.

You can sign up online to volunteer here or contact Elizabeth Ringle for other volunteer opportunities.

Other ways to support BSP Free Clinic

Both annual donations and contributions to the BSP Free Clinic Fund are critical to maintaining specialty health care access for those in need.

Annual support
Because the clinic provides services to patients with no insurance, it is totally reliant on donations from individuals and organizations and on the volunteer physicians and other practitioners who provide the direct care. For every $1 secured from donors and grants, volunteer clinicians provide $3.50 of specialty health care, diagnostics and lab work.

To help fund the clinic’s annual operations and vital services, make your check payable to BSP Free Clinic and mail to 2711 Allen Blvd, Middleton, WI 53562.

Funding the future
To secure the future of BSP Free Clinic and its services, the Wisconsin Medical Society Foundation has established a dedicated fund. A gift to the fund will have a lasting impact and provide sustainable funding to support BSP Free Clinic’s operations in the years to come. To add your support to the fund, click here or contact Foundation director Marje Murray at 608.442.3722.

Methods of giving
In addition to cash, gifts of appreciated stocks, bonds or mutual funds may offer attractive tax savings. Gifts may also be made from your donor advised fund. Those who are 70½ years of age or older have an additional option that offers tax benefits irrespective of whether you itemize deductions that year—donating directly from your traditional Individual Retirement Account (IRA). Speak with your financial advisor and/or tax professional for legal, tax or financial planning advice specific to your situation.
