Close to 200 medical students and 80 physicians participated in the Wisconsin Medical Society Foundation’s Operation: Education programs held at the Medical College of Wisconsin (MCW) and University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and Public Health (UWSMPH) in January. This program offers career exploration for students and mentoring opportunities for physicians.

More than two dozen different primary or specialty careers were represented during each of the events. After a simple buffet dinner, students had the chance to meet with several of the physician volunteers in attendance, providing them a great opportunity to learn more about careers they might be considering or to be introduced to options they may not have considered. To add a little fun, physicians and students also played the Hasbro board game “Operation” for a few minutes to earn prizes.
The Foundation’s Operation: Education program offers students the chance to form helpful relationships with physicians and residents, and for the physician volunteers, it’s a rewarding volunteer opportunity.
“This was our 16th year of making this program available to medical students,” said Foundation Executive Director Eileen Wilson. “It was especially gratifying to see so many who attended this program as students now attending as residents or early-career physicians to share their knowledge and experience with those who will soon follow a similar path.”
