Mission: to advance the health of the people of Wisconsin by supporting medical education and health initiatives.

Physicians and medical students promote medical careers and healthy living

Physicians and medical students teamed up to share their knowledge and passion for medicine with thousands of young people and their families at the Wisconsin Medical Society Foundation’s station on UW-Madison’s campus during the Wisconsin Science Festival, October 17-19 in Madison. Activities were also held in other areas of the state.

The Wisconsin Medical Society Foundation and the University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and Public Health Doctors Ought to Care student group co-hosted a station at the Discovery Building on UW-Madison’s campus again this year. The interactive station gave attendees the opportunity to see, touch and learn about human organs including the heart, lung, brain, liver, stomach and more. The volunteers shared healthy living messages with the goal of encouraging visitors to keep their bodies healthy, inside and out.

Kids also had the chance to visualize themselves as a physician by trying on a white coat. With current and projected shortages of physicians in the state, the Wisconsin Science Festival allows the Foundation to promote medical and health care careers among young people from numerous school districts and communities across south central Wisconsin over the three days. Eau Claire-Dunn-Pepin County Medical Society sponsored a dozen different science-related activities in a Chippewa Valley Edition of the Wisconsin Science Festival again this year. The activities, some for families and others for adults only, promoted science in very creative ways. Sessions included: The Science of Beer; The Science of Barbeque; The Physics of Cold: A Liquid Nitrogen Show!; The Science of Life After Death: Organ Donation; Glass Blowing and more!

Inspired by the Wisconsin Science Festival although scheduled on a different date, a group of medical students and resident/attending physicians from Gundersen Health System in La Crosse coordinated a Science of Medicine expo at Hamilton Elementary School aimed at introducing students to the exciting field of medicine.
